Ambiguous Boundaries
〈Ambiguous Boundaries〉 was a kinetic installation commissioned by the Arts Information Center at the Seoul Institute of the Arts. The work consisted of thin metal pipe polygon structures driven by stepper motors, covered with flexible fabric, and overlaid with real-time video projection. As the triangular structures moved and deformed, the projection coordinates were continuously adjusted, creating a close correspondence between virtual imagery and the movement of physical matter. Through this interaction, the work explored shifting boundaries between material and image, and between the physical and the virtual.
Civilization and science have long developed through ways of understanding the world by dividing and classifying it. Digital technology represents an extreme form of this logic, translating continuous reality into clearly defined units of 0 and 1. Contemporary science and technology, however, increasingly engage with relational and simultaneous phenomena that cannot be fully explained through isolated elements alone, including quantum superposition and entanglement, artificial intelligence, networked objects, and large-scale data systems. The work responded to this shift by considering clearly separated parts together with the relationships formed between them and the larger whole that emerges beyond those divisions.
The motor-driven metal pipes divided the space into multiple triangular units, creating rigid structures and distinct boundaries. In contrast, the elastic fabric stretched across them expanded and contracted with the movement of each element, connecting the separated surfaces into a continuous skin-like form. As real-time imagery was layered onto this changing surface, the boundaries of the structure alternated between clarity and ambiguity, while the physical surface at times appeared almost immaterial. Moving continuously between material and immaterial, clarity and ambiguity, and part and whole, 〈Ambiguous Boundaries〉 expressed how separate elements could form a constantly transforming whole through their relationships.
